Most people leave their job at the end of the day and leave their work at the office until they return the next day. I however, approach my career with a different attitude. I’m an Audi enthusiast at work and at home. Having been involved with the Audi product for the last 25 years, I have grown a passion for the brand that sees no end. This can be seen with my hobbies and in the project I created in my home workshop.
I first saw a factory prepared Audi 80 Coupe race car built for the European Touring Car Series of 1981 at Mosport in 1982 competing at the 6 hour IMSA event. I really liked the Coupe body style and thought how I would love to own such a car someday. Being a factory trained Audi technician, I did have the skills to handle the task. As it worked out I ended up owning a used Audi Coupe in 1987, and hoped to someday recreate the car I saw race.
Luck went my way it would seem, as the owner of this factory Audi Sport racecar sold it to a Toronto based motorsport team. Long time racer and Canadian Motorsport Hall of fame inductee Rudy Bartling was given the job of restoring it for historic racing. This gave me an opportunity to inspect the car closely, and the owners were good enough to loan me the bodywork to reproduce it for myself. This was important as it really was the only components I had no access to, and was key to making the car appear correct. The work began and after many late nights and hours of weekend work I was able to create the car in these photos.
That original factory car has recently found it’s way to the Audi Museum in Ingolstadt Germany and is one of three cars built for racing in 1981 and may be the only one existing. This knowledge made me feel proud of what I created.
I apply the same detail and care as this car shows everyday in my career at Pfaff Audi in Newmarket while servicing the many A3s to R8s that enter my workbay. The enthusiasm and assistance my colleagues and the dealership divisions have given me with this project are some of the reasons I am proud to be involved with the brand and continue to endorse and support the growth of Audi while at the same time honoring it’s past.
