Noel and Michael Croxon were honoured at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of York (BBBSY) A Classic Night Out gala, held Nov. 14 at Le Parc Banquet Hall in Markham.
Michael, President and CEO of NewRoads Automotive Group, was honoured for his fundraising efforts and his father, Noel, was recognized for his involvement with the organization since 1970. “They have both played very significant roles in supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of York over the many years they have been involved,” said Sarah Dame, president and CEO of BBBSY. “We couldn’t be more thankful for their continued support, their commitment to giving back and to making a difference in children’s lives.” The Croxons have supported the cause for many years both in Toronto and York Region. They were pleased to be recognized by the organization for their contributions. “It was a great honour for both Noel and myself,” Michael stated. “It was unexpected but certainly made us both proud about what we have given over the years.” Noel joined the board of Big Brothers Metro in 1970. In the 80s, he became a big brother to Jason Baumeister. He was also one of the founders of the Big Brothers Gourmet Dinner in Toronto. It started with 50 businessmen and has since grown significantly.
It is now attended by over 1,000 people every year.
In 1988, Noel was named Big Brother of the Year and honoured at a Big Brothers Metro celebration at the Royal York hotel in Toronto. Michael became involved with BBBSY when they first opened their General Motors dealership in Newmarket. When the business moved to northern York Region, the owners identified charities they would like to support. “Given our long history with Big Brothers in Toronto, this was a natural choice,” said Michael. Every year, the dealership in Newmarket hosts a vintage car show in conjunction with the Highway 11 Cruisers. All the proceeds go to BBBSY. “Sarah and her team do really meaningful work,” Michael stated. “It is a great organization with a specific mandate to assist youth who do not have the benefit of a mother or father in their lives. Kids need influence from both sides.” Each year at the gala, BBBSY honours individuals who have made contributions to the organization. “Big brothers and sisters are individuals who want to give back, want to make a difference and want to be a positive role model for their ‘little,’” said Dame. “Children need our continued commitment to providing life-changing mentoring and relationships.” Written by Angela Gismondi
