Optimism You Can Feel
David Britton is one of the most upbeat, optimistic people you’ll ever meet. The energetic General Manager of Kia of Newmarket clearly doesn’t just turn it up for show, it’s simply an outlook on life that has become merged with his personality. David is the driving force of camaraderie and warmth you feel upon entering the front doors of the showroom; members of the staff are chosen by him primarily based on their optimism for the brand, for the work, and for everyone who comes in.
“I hire for optimism,” David says, adding that he would hire someone for attitude alone. In fact, he views a prospective employee’s previous experience with other brands as a detriment; too much to un-learn in order to teach her about everything Kia has to offer. He’d much rather start from scratch with people who have never been in the auto industry in order to train them effectively from the start. But attitude and interaction take precedence in success working with him. “There are three things you need if you want to work here,” David says. “You need to focus on – and be committed to – the dealership, the customers, and the co-workers.”
David has been in the automotive industry for 20 years, and was only too happy to take on the position at Kia of Newmarket. “What I like about this place,” he explains, “is that the brand matches our attitude: young, fresh, new, and reliable.” And aesthetically appealing is becoming a larger part of the brand’s image, as well: Peter Schreyer, former Chief Designer for Audi, has been lured over to Kia as Chief Design Officer in order to take on – and conquer – the challenge of creating more desirable looks for Kia’s growing range of vehicles. You can see his influence on the new Optima, for example: out are past tinny looks in favour of a European influence to the Optima’s lines.
A part of the NewRoads Automotive Group of dealerships, Kia of Newmarket has been at its current Yonge Street location for coming up on three years. Both of its previous moves – all within Newmarket – have been to a better, larger facility in order to accommodate the dealership’s growing popularity. “We’re up about 20% year-over-year,” David says; –impressive numbers for one of the most recent brands to come to Canada.
David is quick to add that the dealership’s success is due in part to its exclusive 6 Reasons To Shop At Kia of Newmarket, which go above and beyond the notable warranties and services already offered by Kia. With each new vehicle purchase or lease from Davids dealership, customers have a one year return policy; save 2.7 cents per litre of gas; are offered alternative transportation during servicing; become enrolled in the Kia Rewards Program; receive an anti-theft package; and receive free winter tire storage.
The appeal of Kia of Newmarket – from David to his staff and to the exclusive perks – is enough not only to have people often refer familyand friends to the dealership, but to keep coming back themselves. One customer recently bought her third vehicle from them.
“Brand and personal loyalty is strong in communities like Newmarket,” David says. And his dealership is loyal in return, giving back to the community. Following in typical NewRoads fashion, Kia of Newmarket sponsors local hockey teams, has given away a car for free, supports various charities as a matter of course (along with having a particular Charity of the Month), and for the last couple of winters has hosted free public skating events. With the way they’ve been going, it sounds like Kia of Newmarket will be around to host many more.
