It’s all about who you know.
Local classic car enthusiast, Scott Sinclair, is the proud owner of a 1970 Plymouth Superbird, and the acquisition of such a rare muscle car is a story of knowing the right people.
“The preamble is, a good friend of mine and I had a chance to buy two Superbirds from two brothers in Kentucky. We had the money together and we agreed on the price. We were all ready to go, but the brothers backed out and stopped answering the telephone,” said Mr. Sinclair.
That didn’t stop this classic car aficionado, however, as the opportunity to acquire that same make and model came knocking at the door once again.
“It kind of wetted my interest about getting a Mopar, and thought maybe one will come along,” he said. “I was up in Muskoka on January 1 of 2006. I was at a New Year’s Eve party. I knew the lady that was hosting the party, her father owned one. So, I asked if her dad still had the Superbird. She said, ‘Certainly, certainly, it’s down in the storage building at the marina.’”
Mr. Sinclair then jumped at the chance and asked if he could look at it the next day, and she said yes.
“The next day, her father was there, and he took us down to the building. He took the cover off the Superbird. I looked at it and asked how long he had owned it. He said he got it in Florida in 1985,” he said. “He saw it for sale and thought it was a really interesting car, so I decided to buy it. He said he drove it home March of that year from Florida to Muskoka, and he had owned it ever since.”
Mr. Sinclair asked how many miles were on the Superbird, and since the owner didn’t have much time to drive it, he had only put on it about 3000 miles since 1985.
“So, I looked at the car, and a couple months went by, and my friend who was going to buy a Superbird calls me and said that he found a Superbird in Muskoka. So, I asked if he bought it; and he said, ‘Not yet, but I’m giving it strong consideration,’” he said.
Mr. Sinclair then called up Pam, the woman who held the New Year’s Eve party, and asked if the Superbird was still available.
“She put me on the phone with her dad, who was right there, and we talked and I put in an offer. I said I’ll send him a cheque for 20 per cent of the money to solidify the deal, and when you get back we’ll get together and I’ll get the car from you.”
On Sept. 14, Mr. Sinclair will showcase his Superbird at the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
