Owners of Classic Cars come from various backgrounds and professions, but they all share one common interest, the love of a special automobile.
It is not surprising to find out that there are a couple of Mayors of municipalities just steps from the Toronto that own that special automobile.
Aurora Mayor Geoffrey Dawe is one such person. Geoffrey’s term of office as Mayor of Aurora is for the period 2010 to 2014. Aurora’s population is approximately 50,000 and with the numerous responsibilities, meetings, events, etc. taking place on a regular basis, the position of Mayor is a full time job and Geoffrey is a full time Mayor.
Geoff has always had an interest in sports cars. His first car in 1971 was a Datsun 240Z [forerunner of the Nissan] which was the Japanese version of the Jaguar XKE. After the 240Z came a 1991 SX Datsun.
However, Geoff has always had a love affair with Jaguars. He has owned a selection of Jaguars in recent years, a 2004 S type; 2006 ST8 and currently he drives a 2011 SF.
Geoff’s dream was to one day own a Jaguar XKE. To celebrate his 50th birthday and with his wife’s approval, Geoff set out to find that special XKE. The search took about a year. Then in 2001 Geoff saw an ad in the Classic Car Section of the Globe and Mail newspaper – his search was over. He had found a 1968 Jaguar XKE built in 1967. The body and engine were in really good condition but the interior needed to be restored. Geoff purchased the car.
It has a 4.2 L engine producing 265 hp. There are about 89,000 miles on the car. For car enthusiasts, the XKE has “matching numbers” and a Certificate of Authenticity.
Special note should be made of the fact that the Jaguar XKE was the first car to be inducted into the Museum of Moder Art in New York City.
Geoff uses the XKE for pleasure driving and trips to his cottage in Gravenhurst. To drive the XKE is a great way to relieve some of the stress of being mayor of a large municipality. He puts about 2,000 miles on the car a year.
When the XKE needs to be repaired there are two ways to go about that task, the first is to search for original old parts from various sources, the second is to purchase “new old stock” which means new parts built to original specifications. There are a few collector car part suppliers in the United States and you can search the internet for parts made to the original specifications.
What does Geoff hope to own in the future – an XK 140 or 150.
