Since its inception in Saskatchewan in 2009, A&W’s Cruisin’ for a Cause has had one purpose, and that is to create awareness and raise funds for those living with multiple sclerosis (MS).
The fundraiser has come from a small initiative to raise money and awareness for people living with MS in Canada to a nation-wide effort having raised over $3.3 million for the MS Society of Canada.
On Aug. 23, celebrate Cruisin’ for a Cause Day at A&W at 44 Broadway in Orangeville. Bring your family, friends, and colleagues for a day and night of fun, knowing that you are making an impact in the lives of Canadians with MS.
Shannon Reid, Manager of A&W restaurant in Orangeville, has made it her personal goal to raise as much money as possible for this cause.
“I think it’s my third year. You usually have a walk for MS, but this is a cruise because of all the old cars that we get out,” she said adding that she helps by going around from business to business to see if they’ll donate anything.
“All the proceeds I get I give to [the MS Society of Canada]. Every Teen Burger we sell, a dollar goes to MS as well,” she said.
Ms. Reid said that this fundraiser is extremely beneficial as it is not only A&W and employees that aid in the raising of funds, but businesses in the area as well.
“The last couple of years have been really good. Two years ago Scotia Bank sponsored me. Whatever I made that day, they matched it, which was about $1500.”
Last year, over $1 million was raised from all the stores across Canada. Ms. Reid said that due to an illness, she did not do very well last year, but the previous year she did.
“I collected over $6000 [in 2011]. I was sick last year, so I wasn’t able to get out there and fundraise. I would love to raise another $6000 this year. It would be nice if all the local businesses gave a little bit [of money].”
To become involved, Ms. Reid said you can contact her at A&W where she will be more than gracious and gratuitous for the help.
“You can get in contact with me here, which would be nice,” she said. “People have been really good with donating. Sometimes people will donate oil or car cleaner stuff. There’s always something. On the day of MS (Aug. 25), it’s unbelievable how people come together and the amount of donations I get.”
Those interested can contact Ms. Reid at A&W for more information regarding donations at 519-942-1492.
