When one thinks of car shows, the thought of Capuchin Franciscan monks does not usually come to mind. However, the second annual car show at the Mount Alverno Retreat Centre combines those very things with a whole lot of fun. Response from last year’s show marked it as a success and now the show is back for a second summer at the centre, and is still growing. The car show is to be held at the spiritual retreat centre and all around its vast property, which spans over 100 acres. The space has been used as a retreat centre by the monks since the late 1960s, but on July 13th it will be revved up to host the vintage car show. For the past six to seven months employees like Jim Bren and Mary English have been planning in order to make the show and fundraiser a success. This year attendees can expect vintage cars and motorcycles from Midland to Milton and everywhere in between, breakfast in the retreat centre, food services, beer service provided by the Caledon Optimists and even a jumping castle for the kids. Due to the expansive property there are also countless trails and a handful of mazes to explore throughout the day. But with the amount of land that they have available for the car show it only seems fitting to fill it up with vintage cars and sponsors for the day. Said cars will be judged by the people attending the show to crown the People’s Choice Best in Class Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles. Last year the big winner was a 1968 Chevrolet Camero all the way from Arthur, Ontario, but this year there is sure to be more competition for the title. This event is a way to raise money for this beautiful centre in an unconventional way, which will expand the centre’s horizons. So come out to the Mount Alverno Retreat Centre on July 13th from 9am-3pm for a truly divine day of fun.
