Its been almost 40 years since the Newmarket Car Club was formed, 39 to be exact and it looks as though there’s no stopping it. I first experienced the camaraderie of its members 32 years ago when I participated in it’s second annual car show. This however was MY first car show. I had prepared a very hot street Camaro that I was proud of and thought it may be fun to show it off. It was held in the Newmarket Arena in the downtown core. I was slightly apprehensive about entering this show as I knew no one there and no one had seen my car. Well, I was in for a big surprise.
The organizers; as well as, participants could not have given me a warmer welcome. Showing me the ropes of a car show (literally) as one fellow even let me share his display with me, stanchions and all. We had a barbeque during the evening which was a blast and I met some interesting people, some of which I still see to this day. The car hobby can be enjoyed at any level, whether you’re a participant or a spectator, visiting one of the club’s many displays. Old cars are fun to look at and the owners always have great stories to tell. Some in fact, get more wild as the years go on, sort of like “fishing” tales and become car community lore.
The Newmarket Car Club holds weekly cruise nights at the Legion on Srigley Street each Wednesday. They also host a summer street show each year. With the help of local merchants and the town in June, they close down Main Street, Newmarket and it becomes a nice stroll back in time with live music, food and fun . Car club members and guests show off their historic cars and trucks to the awe of residents and visitors alike.
A new show at Fairy Lake is scheduled for August 10th this summer and “should be a hit”, says club president, Dan Arnold. “We love to give back to the community as well”, he explains. “Providing sponsorship to minor hockey and supporting the local food pantry, is something we’re very proud of.” “The club also provides a great show for the town senior’s centre”, Dan told me, “It’s always looked forward to by the residents” he said. So bring your classic car or just come for a stroll this summer and check out the Newmarket classic car scene.
