With October upon us, we turn our minds to Autumn – picking apples among the beautiful Fall colours, jumping in leaves, and of course Halloween. But this year, Fines Ford Lincoln of Bolton has partnered with Allan Drive Middle School to bring extra meaning and impact to Halloween.
Ford Motor Company is corporate sponsor of We Scare Hunger, an initiative of a group of organizations called WE, working together under one umbrella. They work globally to provide food security, education, clean water, health care and alternative sources of income for impoverished communities. But we often forget that right here in our own community there are children that go hungry every day and that is where We Scare Hunger comes into play – children are encouraged to trick≠or≠treat for non≠perishable food items to collect much needed food for local food banks. The program extends to year≠long education on the issues around poverty and hunger around the world.
Carlos Martins is General Manager of Fines Ford Lincoln in Bolton. He immediately jumped at the opportunity to get involved. “This is such an important initiative, and we are proud to be part of it. By partnering with Allan Drive Middle School we can make a real difference in our community. Until October 31st we are accepting non≠perishable food items to help Free The Children stand up to hunger in Caledon. Individuals that donate will be entered to win a Full Detailing Package ($399 value) for their vehicle.”
The WE group comprises Feed The Children, We To Me and We Day. We Day is a celebration of youth making a difference in their local and global communities. We Schools is the yearlong program that nurtures compassion in young people and gives them the tools to create transformative social change, including initiative like the We Scare Hunger Halloween food drive.
While it’s wonderful to get the kids actively involved in collecting food, the educational component of this program is just as important. According to the organization it is this knowledge and education that will engender long≠term change, with a view to making hunger a thing of the past.
So when you stock up on candy, plastic gravestones and paper ghosts, please spare a thought for those less fortunate. Have some non≠perishable food items on hand, and help the school kids stock the shelves of the local food bank. Fines Ford Lincoln will have donation boxes available at the dealership for the whole month of October, and donations to the Caledon Community Services food bank can also be made there.
Together WE can make a difference.
